A center activity can be a great first freebie!

What to plan before creating:

  • Skill/Standard you’d like to cover: Uppercase and lowercase
  • Activity Type: Matching Activity
  • Theme: Crayons
  • Number of task cards: 26, since is alphabet
  • Question/content for each task card

(There are PowerPoint templates for this chapter! Download it here.)

Main components of a center

The main components are (1) Task Cards/Mats, (2) Recording Sheet, (3) Center Cover/Instructions, and (4) I Can Cards – optional.

Creating the center

1. Task cards/mats

Task Cards main elements:

  1. Rectangle boxes (or table) to form the cuttings lines (use my templates!)
  2. Clipart
  3. Text Boxes

2. Recording sheet

Recording Sheet main elements:

  1. Name blank + Directions
  2. Title
  3. Main content (Clipart + Text)
  4. Copyright + Store name
  5. Answer sheet – if applicable

The worksheet templates for chapter 19 works really well for recordings sheets!

3. Center Cover/Instructions

Center Cover main elements: (there’s a template for this too!)

  1. Title
  2. Directions
  3. Thumbnails of the resource ‘in-action’ style
  4. Standards reference
  5. Copyright + Store name

4. I Can Cards

I Can Cards main elements:

  1. Title, which is I can
  2. Numbered directions
  3. Clipart + Thumbnails to act as visual directions

5. Create black and white versions of everything

Duplicate all the slides/pages you’ve created so far, or just duplicate the entire PowerPoint file.

In the duplicated file, replace all the colored clipart with black and white clipart. Except for the recording sheet, since it’s likely already in black and white.

Chapter 20 Action Steps

  • Put together your own center! Make use of the clipart and font freebies in my store, and use my PowerPoint templates as a starting point.
