Chapter 14: PowerPoint Notes – Working with tables

Tables play an important role in the layout of your resource. This chapter contains some useful examples.

1. How to add a table

  • Insert > Table > Select the squares to indicate the number of rows and columns you want to add.

2. Table shading

The default color of the table is not great. So the first step is to get rid of it.

  • Table design > Shading (paint bucket) > No Fill

3. Table borders

Adding table borders is a 2-step thing.

Step 1: Select pen weight

  • Table Design > Pen Weight > 1 pt

Step 2: Borders

  • Table Design > Borders > All Borders

4. Resize the table

Table Row Height and Table Column Width

After dragging out the approximate size, you can adjust it more precisely by typing in the row height and table column width.

  • Select the whole table.
  • Go to Layout tab
  • Table Row Height = 3.5″
  • Table Column Width = 4.1″

5. Text alignment in tables (for Task Cards)

Tables are great for adding text.

  • Select the table
  • Layout tab > Center Text + Align Bottom

You also need to go to the Home tab

  • Font color = black (or whatever you choose)
  • Font = your choice!
  • Font size = your choice!

6. Insert rows/columns (for Worksheets)

  • Select the table.
  • Layout > Insert Right
  • If you are inserting rows, you’ll probably need to resize again.

7. Delete rows/columns

  • Select the table.
  • Layout > Delete > Delete Rows

8. Dragging the table borders

You can resize the table by dragging any of the borders. You will see a red guiding line as you drag.

9. Dashes border (Cut and paste worksheets)

  • Select the table.
  • Go to Table Design tab
  • Pen Style = Dashes
  • Pen Weight = 3pt
  • Borders = All Borders

10. Add shading

  • Highlight the top row of the table
  • Table Design > Shading > choose a color

11. Insert table with 10 columns and 10 rows (100’s Chart)

  • Insert > Table > Insert Table
  • Number of columns: 10
  • Number of rows: 10

Do the shading and border.

Do the alignment, table row height and column width (0.8″), font color, font and font size.

12. Inside borders (Word Search)

Here’s how to get rid of the inside borders.

  • Go to Table Design tab
  • Pen Style: No Border
  • Border: Inside Border

13. Outside Borders

  • Go to Table Design tab
  • Pen Weight: 3 pt
  • Border: Outside Borders

14. Draw table (100’s Chart Puzzle)

This helps you thicken selective borders.

  • Select the table.
  • Go to Table Design tab
  • Pen Weight: 3 pt
  • Table Design > Draw Table
  • Click on each of the inner border you want to ‘draw’ on
