Chapter 10: PowerPoint Notes – Working with colors

(back to Build a TpT Store)

Finding color codes

One of the easiest way to communicate color digitally is through Hex color codes. It looks something like #FFED86 (hashtag + 6 alphanumeric).

There are a few great places to find the hex color codes for your brand.

Canva

A good place to start is Canva’s color palettes (https://www.canva.com/colors/color-palettes/). Click on any of the color palettes you like and it will bring you to a page with the color codes.

Color Websites

There are websites dedicated just to color palettes. One example is colorhunt.co.

Google

Type something like ‘kid friend color palettes’ or ‘best color palette’ and you will find many things. Look under the image search results too.

Using hex color codes in PowerPoint

1. Create a 1-inch square shape

Go to PowerPoint and create a square shape (1 in x 1 in). You can use these squares to ‘store’ your colors and arrange them into a palette.

2. Change the fill color with the hex color code(s)

  • Select the square
  • Go to Shape Format > Format Pane > FILL > Color Bucket > More Colors
  • A new dialog box will pop up, choose the Color Sliders tab.
  • Choose RGB Sliders instead of Grayscale Slider from the dropdown menu.
  • Enter the Hex Color # and click OK

3. Practice recreating this palette

  • Copy and paste to get 4 squares in a row
  • Change the colors of the squares to #FFED86, #FFB067, #A2DCE7 and #F8CCDC (find this example in the PowerPoint Files)

4. Change the palette to your own colors

  • 2 to 7 colors is a good number, but you can have any number of colors you want.
  • Group the row of squares together (Right Click > Group > Group).
  • Keep your palette in any PowerPoint file so that you can find it the next time you need it.

Eyedropper tool

1. Using the eyedropper tool to pick up colors (from your color palette)

Want to change the color of your shape or text box? Copy and paste your color palette into the PowerPoint slide and do the following:

  • Select the shape/text box.
  • Go to Shape Format > Format Pane > FILL > Color Bucket > More Colors
  • A new dialog box will pop up.
  • Click on the Eyedropper Tool, and a magnified circle will pop up.
  • Move the Eyedropper Tool (magnified circle) over the color you want on your color palette, and click to select.
  • Then click OK

2. Using the eyedropper tool to pick up color in clipart

You can also borrow colors from clipart.

Repeat the same steps, except, move the eyedropper (magnified circle) over the clipart instead. Try this yourself with the PowerPoint file!
